Santa Monica Bay Diving Log: The Quarry Rock Pile Sites #3

The two quarry rock sites located outside of the Santa Monica pier were named for the fishing boat skippers who rediscovered them.  One is called Deacon’s and the other Rowland’s.  Both have proved to be excellent dive and fishing sites over many years.

Deacon’s

This dive site is located in about 78 feet of water just south and outside of Santa Monica Pier.  It’s sometimes difficult to locate because it’s small, and the high point reads just a five foot rise on the fathometer.  In the late 1970’s through the 1980’s, myself and a couple of friends were the only ones diving here.  We used to dive this site once a month and then let it sit until it restocked itself.  We almost always caught a dozen or more bugs per dive during that era.  Now a number of other people dive here and it’s not nearly as productive.  Nevertheless, when you catch it right, you’ll do well.  We’ve also speared some of our largest sand bass on this pile.  If you’re not a diver it’s still a very productive fishing site.  My longtime diving buddy Bill liked this site so much that when he died and was cremated he had his ashes spread here.  If you’re diving Deacon’s and you feel like you’re not alone, now you know why.  We have longitudinal and latitudinal points, as well as landmarks, to help you find this small but productive rock pile.

More to follow….next week, Rowland’s
